Breakaway Switch
The function of a breakaway switch is to automatically engage the brakes of the trailer should the trailer become separated from the towing vehicle while en-route. The breakaway switch is of two parts, one mounted to the vehicle being towed and the other part is hooked to the towing vehicle. The two parts are connected at the switch, which looks like this:
The part with the wire is what goes on the towing vehicle. How does it operate? If the trailer should be separated from the towing vehicle, the 12v battery will supply power to the brakes causing them to slow down the towed vehicle.
